These were termed ‘cache,’ from the French meaning ‘to hide.’ When a location in slower memory was accessed, it and the surrounding region would be loaded into the cache memory in a block. In the ’70s, a number of major developments came out of Xerox’s Palo Alto Research Center . These included the graphical user interface, ethernet networking and the laser printer. In addition to these was a new way of thinking about programming, known as object oriented design.

Rather than viewing programs as a set of subroutines which called each other, as procedural programming encouraged, object oriented programming decomposed a large program into objects. Printing is not currently available via our wifi network.

  • You must book in advance if you wish to use a library computer.
  • If you do not do this, current sessions may be extended by the people who are already using the computers and you will have to wait longer for a computer to become available.
  • There are computers in all our libraries for public use.
  • Children and young people aged 8 to 15 years must be library members and have parental permission to use the library computers.
  • You must have an adult membership card to book an adult computer.
